The regular season for local winter athletes is winding down, giving way to postseason action for the Warriors, Lions, and Tigers.

In girls basketball, Elk Lake and Lackawanna Trail are both in 2A classification, which only has seven teams in the division. So all teams will make the postseason, which begins with quarterfinals on Tuesday, Feb. 15 with matchups and locations to me determined by the end of this week. Semifinals are scheduled for Friday, Feb. 21.

As of Feb. 10, Elk Lake was in fourth place, and Trail in sixth, with two games remaining for each school.

Tunkhannock Area girls finished tenth, and were not eligible to qualify for the playoffs, as the 4A bracket takes the top 8 teams, as well as any team that finishes over .500.

On the boys’ side, Trail has already secured a playoff spot, and Elk Lake was in fourth as of Feb. 10. The 2A boys class also takes the top 8 and over .500 teams, so all but one team will make the postseason. Both teams have two games each remaining before final seedings are released.

In 4A boys, Tunkhannock is guaranteed more games, as they completed their regular season schedule with a 15-7 record, and in third place as the rest of the classification battled out for the remaining seeds.

The boys games for all three schools will begin with quarterfinals on Wednesday, Feb. 19 and semifinals on Saturday, Feb. 22.

The postseason teams are hoping to make it to Championship Weekend at Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre. On Friday, Feb. 28 at 4 p.m., the game for the 2A girls is scheduled, and Saturday, Feb. 29 will feature a back-to-back showing of 2A and 4A boys teams at 2 and 4 p.m.

Wrestling team championships have ended, but there are still opportunities for individual grapplers to advance.

Individual districts for all three of our local schools will be held Feb. 21 and 22 at Hazleton Area High School.

From there, the winners will advance to regionals at Williamsport Area HS on Feb. 28 and 29.

State competition will be held at the Giant Center in Hershey from March 5-7.

In swimming and diving, the postseason will stretch across two weeks, as diving is Saturday, Feb. 22 and swimming is Feb 28 and 29.

Both events will be held at the CYC pool in Wilkes-Barre.

In the diving competition, the time schedule will be determined by the number of entries, and those interested are encouraged to check the District 2 website often for updates.

Elk Lake and Tunkhannock are both 2A participants, so they will swim beginning at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 28. Friday’s events are the 200 medley relay, 200 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 100 fly, and 200 free relay. All other events will occur Saturday at 11 a.m.

The spectator and locker room areas open at 9:15 a.m.
