Tunkhannock'sTommy Traver (138) and Gavin D'Amato (145) took gold at last weekend's Wyoming Valley Conference tournament at Lake-Lehman High School

Traver defeated longtime club partner Josh Bonomo of Lake-Lehman in the finals in his quickest match yet, 25 seconds.

It was the third quickest pin of the tournament.

Junior D’Amato also won a championship at 145, with a 9-6 decision over Lake-Lehman’s Hunter Burke.

Tunkhannock’s Owen Woods (106) took home a silver after losing by major decision, 19-6, to Hazelton’s Johnny Corra.

Ethan Munley (132) and Jhamal Zacharias (285) each captured thirds on Saturday. Munley had a 7-1 decision over Crestwood’s Tyler Shaud, while Zacharias pinned Ethan Hughes of Berwick in 2:04.

In fifth place battles, Alex Pierce won by decision over Nanticoke’s Jacob Gall at 160. At 182, Jeff Meader pinned John Symons of Pittston in 1:11. Nick Marabell (195) won his match by forfeit against Jaryn Polit-Moran.

As a team, the Tigers finished fourth with 157.5 points. Hazleton Area celebrated their record third victory at the Wyoming Valley Conference tournament.

The Cougars scored the second-highest points total (249) in the 10-year history of the event, doing so with five champions and 11 total medalists all placing third or higher. No school had ever placed 11 wrestlers in the top-three before.

FRIDAY

On Friday evening, in the first round of championships, Matt Rosentel (120), Alexzandre Pierce (160), and Logan Hegedty (220) all took wins by pinfall.
In the quarterfinals, Owen Woods pinned Hunter Greenberg of Crestwood in 39 seconds, while Jhamal Zacharias pinned Wyoming Valley West’s Manny Selever in 49 seconds.
The Tigers also earned points from Ethan Munley’s 22-5 win over Sa’id Hollis in the 132 bracket, Tommy Traver’s pin of Stephen Martisofski (Coughlin) at 138-pounds, and Gavin D’Amato’s pin over Jared Banesh of Hanover in 4:11.
Tyler Chesla won his match  at 170 by pinning Carl Johnson (Meyers) in the second round of consolations, as did Pierce when he pinned Coughlin’s Stephen Youkoski in 53 seconds.
Jeffrey Meader started out with a loss by pin from Chandler O’Farrell (Crestwood) in the opener, but came back to pin Coughlin’s Joe Davis in the second round of conseys. Meader would go 3-2 in the tournament, with both losses coming from O’Farrell.
Freshman Nick Marabell lost his only bout of the evening, dropping a 3-0 decision to WVW 195 David White. Tyrese Konen, also a freshman, did not advance to Saturday after both of his matches resulted in losses. Konen was pinned by Michael Gavin (Crestwood) in the first round and by Dallas’ Nick Solinsky in the second round of conseys.
