Cody Moyle collected 48-yards on Friday night in a win over Montrose.

Lackawanna Trail scored early, often and quick en route to a 42-8 victory over Montrose Area in a Lackawanna Football Conference Division IV game Friday night.

“It was a great team effort. The kids played hard and we are excited to be off to a 3-0 start,” said head coach Steve Jervis.

Noah Coleman put the Lions on the board on their second offensive play with a 56-yard touchdown run to give No. 8 Trail (3-0 overall, 1-0 league) a 7-0 lead less than one minute into the game. Coleman finished with 136 rushing yards on only three carries.

After a three-and-out by Montrose (0-3, 0-1) on its first possession, the Lions blocked a punt that was recovered by Mark Dunckle, who scooped up the ball and returned it 17 yards to put the Lions up, 14-0, less than three minutes into the game.

On the first play of their next possession, Lions quarterback Nathan Rolka hit an open Nico Berrios on a deep route for a 56-yard touchdown pass and a 21-0 Lackawanna Trail lead.

Berrios also contributed heavily on defense from his defensive back position by snagging three interceptions in the game.

Cody Moyle tacked on another score for the Lions, which put Lackawanna Trail ahead, 28-0, in the first quarter.

Trail running back Ray Melnikoff scored two more touchdowns, both in the second quarter, to give the Lions a 42-0 lead at halftime.

Trail’s defense stuffed Montrose’s offense in the first two quarters, holding the Meteors to just 19 total offensive yards in the first half.

Jervis added, “This week will be a big test for us as Dunmore comes to town.”
