Conditioning, as shown here by freshman Owen Woods on the pull up bar, is pivotal in wrestling.

Coming off of their second straight 5-1 season, coach Bob Hedgedty and the Tunkhannock Area Tigers wrestling team look to start this year strong.

Hegedty, an Elk Lake grad who is in his tenth year at the helm of the Tigers grappling program, lost some senior experience when David Gavek, Connor Munley, Sam Rice, and Thomas Perry graduated.

But senior Tommy Traver, who finished fifth at Regionals last season and boasts a 119-19 record, along with David Evans (70-15) return to guide the team.

Hegedty also feels freshmen up-and-comers Nick Marabell and Owen Woods will make an impact.

“We are trying to get the younger kids caught up to speed, we expect to stay competitive and compete for a district title,” said Hedgety.

Though inexperience will be an issue for the Tigers, Hegedty looks to seniors Traver, Logan Hegedty, Dustin Henry, and exchange student Andrzei Swietek to step up.

In a very competitive Wyoming Valley Conference, the Tigers don’t have any rivals, though their only loss last year was to an undefeated Crestwood team.

The team practices after school in the mat room and will begin their season on Saturday, December 8 at the Pottsville Duals.
