Pittston looked sharp at home Saturday afternoon, showing an array of attacks before topping Tunkhannock in the season opener. It was a pretty good Wyoming Valley Conference opener for the Patriots, as Pittston won four of the seven bouts contested en route to a 48-15 victory over the Tigers.

Tunkhannock, making its debut in Division 1 after going undefeated in Division 2 last season, only had eight wrestlers available Saturday afternoon because of medical and academic issues.

The ones that donned the singlet looked sharp.

State-ranked Owen Woods hit an early, five-point move before pinning Keegan Bucci with three seconds left in the opening period.

Jaden Kozlowski recorded the quickest pin, needing just 30 seconds at heavyweight, while Matt Rosentel got the most dramatic win, breaking away from CJ DeMark with seven seconds left for the 5-4 victory.

“Pittston is going to be very good this year,” Tunkhannock head coach Gary Siegel said. “We just need some work. We had four practices after three weeks off, and it showed. I am proud of the effort because it was really good. But we have a lot of holes, and it’s hard to win when you forfeit six weight classes.”

Patriots Anthony Thomas (138), Felix Mendez (145) and Nate Sudo (215) each picked up victories in contested weights, while Dominic Bernardi (106), Kaitlin Avvisato (113), Julian Everitt (126), Nico Solano (132) and John Symons (189) all received forfeits.

“It was a fast turnaround here and we didn’t have much time to get ready, so I’m impressed with the way they performed tonight,” Pittston Area head coach David Krantz said. “It’s a roller coaster for us, up and down, because you don’t know what’s coming next. And it’s not just us, but everyone in the state. You have the kids prepared for whatever is about to come because you don’t know what’s going to happen.”

“Like we tell the kids, you have to be ready when your number is called,” Krantz said. “We just hope to get a full season in for the kids, and hopefully, they can have something for them in the postseason.”
