The goal of the Tunkhannock Area wrestling team coming into the District 2 Class 3A Team Championships was to wrestle in as many matches as possible.

In a way, that goal was met, as the Tigers battled through four matches en route to a third place finish, though a fourth match meant that Tunkhannock did not have the opportunity to win the team title.

After opening the tournament with a 28-25 victory in a rematch against Scranton, Tunkhannock came up short to host Delaware Valley in the Wednesday (Jan. 31) semifinals, 41-28.

Though the Tigers would respond at Pittston Area High School on Saturday, defeating West Scranton 45-31 in the consolation semifinals before taking down Scranton for a third time this season, 42-33, the main goal of winning the championship wasn’t in the cards.

Delaware Valley went on to win its first title since 2013 on Saturday with a 40-22 win over Coughlin, which edged the Tigers 41-26 on Jan. 26 to clinch the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 crown.

Against Scranton, who Tunkhannock edged 46-22 on Dec. 13, the Tigers fell behind 20-0 after the first four matches before senior Connor Munley stopped the bleeding with a pin at 182 pounds.

Junior Jake Stephens followed with a pin at 195 pounds, and another pin by senior Sam Rice in 27 seconds at heavyweight after a forfeit gave the Tigers a 24-20 lead.

Freshman Matt Rosentel extended that lead to seven with a win by decision at 106 pounds, and pins by sophomore David Evans (113) and senior David Gavek (120) extended the lead to 39-20.

Sophomore Gavin D’Amato also won by decision at 132 pounds and junior Tommy Traver closed out the bout with a pin at 138 pounds.

Against Delaware Valley, the Tigers trailed 14-0 before Munley won by decision to put Tunkhannock on the board.

Pins by Rice at heavyweight and Evans at 106 pulled the Tigers to within 26-16, but Delaware Valley put the match away with a pin at 113 poinds to make it 32-15.

Gavek won by decision at 120 pounds, D’Amato picked up a major decision at 138 and Traver won by pin at 145 pounds.

On Saturday, Tunkhannock opened up against West Scranton with pins from Rice and Evans, and a pin by Gavek and decision by sophomore Ethan Munley at 126 pounds saw the Tigers lead 21-6.

D’Amato won by pin at 138 points and a Traver win by forfeit put things away at 33-12.

Connor Munley and Stephens also had pins to close out the match,

In the rematch against the Knights, pins by Evans and Gavek around a forfeit win by Rosentel gave Tunkhannock an early 18-0 lead.

Trailing 24-9, Scranton would win the next four matches, including handing Traver just his second loss of the year, to lead 27-24, but Connor Munley put the Tigers back ahead, 30-27, with a pin at 182 pounds.

Both teams traded forfeits to hold that three point spot heading into the final match at heavyweight, where Rice would win third for Tunkhannock via pin in 38 seconds.

Tunkhannock is scheduled to host Meyers in a crossover match on Wednesday, Feb. 7, starting at 7 p.m.
