Tunkhannock Area seniors Avery Newhart and Luke Straley took to the court for the final time as singles players in the District 2 Class 2A boys tennis championships on Thursday morning at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre.
Newhart made it to the second round before succumbing to a loss, while Straley was eliminated in his opening round match.
In the first round, Newhart won in straight sets over Mid Valley’s Tom Betz, winning 6-0 in the first set before closing it out with a 6-4 victory.
Holy Cross’ Jimmy Tressler, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, was then able to beat Newhart in the second round in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Straley would also lose in straight sets to Scranton Prep’s Jack Habeeb, who entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed.
Habeeb would win the first set 6-2 before closing things out with a 6-1 win.
Scranton Prep’s Tarquin McGurrin won Class 2A gold with a win over Wyoming Seminary’s Eamon Gibbons in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
In Class 3A, Abington Heights’ Bailey Harris won in straight sets over fellow teammate Timmy Christman, 6-4, 6-0.
Tunkhannock will now switch gears to prepare for the final competition of the season in the doubles tournament, slated for Wednesday, May 17, against at Kirby Park.
The opening three rounds will be played, starting at 9 a.m., with semifinals and finals rounds set for the following day.
Straley and Newhart will team up for the Tigers, along with seniors Alek Greenip and Alex Davis as the second doubles team.
