Tunkhannock has proven in the early part of the season that it is one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the Wyoming Valley Conference.

The Tigers came into Friday night’s conference opener at Wyoming Seminary having made 54 shots from behind the arc. That left Wyoming Seminary no other choice but to extend its defense and make it as difficult as possible for the Tigers to get any sort of clean looks, especially Ryan Harder and Ben Chilson, the top two threats from behind the 3-point line.

Harder came into the game having made 24 3-pointers on the year, while Chilson had made 15. Harder finished the night with 10 points and made just two 3-pointers, while Seminary was able to hold Chilson without a point.

“Teams are going to start doing that against (Ben Chilson and Harder),” Tunkhannock coach Spencer Lunger said. “We have to do a better job of getting them shots. We executed in the first half. Things just did not go our way in the third quarter.”

While Wyoming Seminary was protecting the arc, it was also keeping a man in the lane for extra help for the times when Tunkhannock elected to take the ball to the basket and not settle for a jump shot.

During Wyoming Seminary’s game-deciding spurt, all five starters scored at least one basket, but more importantly, Tunkhannock was only able to get two shots off.

Tunkhannock, now 6-3, was led by Jack Chilson’s 11 points.

“We knew the first 3 minutes of the second half were going to be important,” Lunger said. “The second-chance opportunities hurt us the whole game. We just weren’t making shots. When you give those guys second chances, they are so good, they are going to take advantage of them.”
