Tunkhannock Area graduate Mike Papi has returned to the Columbus Clippers, AAA affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, for the 2018 season.

The Clippers opened the season in Indianapolis on Friday against the Indians, farm team for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Including Papi, the Clippers return only eight players who have previously worn the capital city anchor.

Last season, Papi hit .235 for the team.

Papi’s team opened with a win, but lost the last two games of the series.

On Sunday, the former Tiger played right field and went 1-4 with a walk in the 5-3 loss.

Papi, who played his college ball at Virginia, began last season with the Akron Rubber Ducks before the call to Columbus.

During Spring training in the Cactus League in Glendale, Ariz., Papi dawned the Indians uniform on several occasions, and shifted play from right field to left field.

The Clippers are currently in a 3-game set with Louisville.

They will be in town to play the Scranton /Wilkes-Barre Railriders for a series at PNC field April 23-25.
