STAFF PHOTO/COLLEEN MCALEER Montrose Post 154’s Joe McAleer safely steals third in the 4-3 win over South on Tuesday, June 4.

Tuesday night, June 4, in Montrose, Post 154 out of the Gardner Warner American Legion in Elk Lake, secured the 4-3 win over the scrappy team from South Scranton’s Post 948.

Montrose ended the first two innings by grounding into double plays, and the evening wasn’t looking too good for the boys in blue.

With South already on the board in the second, Ethan Hitchcock drove a ball to the fence and was able to stretch his double to three bags on the throw. Nate Pettyjohn’s single would plate Hitchcock, putting the home team ahead.

In the top of the third, South, with two outs and the bases full, inexplicably had the runner on third break towards the plate while the Montrose pitcher was in his windup. The plan backfired, and as the pitcher did not balk or throw over to third, but continued his motion. The ball was waiting in the glove of catcher Zach Grosvenor as the South runner approached the dish to end the visitor’s half of the inning.

In the fifth frame, South broke the tie when they scored on an RBI single to right.

Not to be outdone, Post 154 came roaring back.

Pinch hitter Devin Ford lead off the inning by reaching base on a dropped third strike and followed it up by swiping second. McAleer ripped a laser up the third base line for an RBI double, tying the game. Two batters later, Pettyjohn would, again, knock in his teammate, this time with a solid hit up the middle.

Pettyjohn finished his day with three hits and two RBIs.

South would score again in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the total team effort of the Montrose team.

Hitchcock secured the win on the bump, tossing four strikeouts in his 98 pitches. Christian Salsman came on to close, needing only 12 pitches to end the game.
