The Montrose Area football team, comprised of students there as well as Elk Lake, broke a 26-game losing streak for the Meteors dating back to 2017.
At St. Anthony’s Field in Dunmore, the Meteors topped Holy Cross, 46-6, with Gus Brown, an Elk Lake student by day, at quarterback, and fellow teammates showing a strong effort on both sides of the ball.
Montrose capitalized on numerous turnovers to roll to the win on Saturday afternoon’s Lackawanna Football Conference Division IV matchup.
The Crusaders (0-3) fumbled the ball nine times, losing seven, and threw an interception. Two of those turnovers led to touchdowns within the final three minutes of the first quarter.
Montrose’s Logan McNamara and Cameron Johnson each scored two touchdowns.
McNamara got the scoring started for the Meteors (1-2) when he scooped up the first Holy Cross fumble of the game and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown. He also ended the scoring, taking an attempted line-drive onside kick and returning it 55 yards with just over two minutes left in the game.
Following McNamara’s fumble return, which gave the Meteors a 6-0 lead, Montrose regained possession after a successful onside kick. Three plays later, Gus Brown hit Lance Rought for a 30-yard scoring strike and a 12-0 Montrose lead.
Following the kickoff, Johnson intercepted a pass and took it 55 yards to give Montrose an 18-0 first quarter lead. Johnson later scored on an 11-yard pass from Brown in the fourth quarter.
Brown threw for 193 yards and had four touchdown passes along with three interceptions.
“Henry Rogers stepped up offensively and defensively, and along with Cameron Johnson, outright played remarkably,” said first year head coach Kerry Patton. “Along with those two, you have to tip your hat to the Holy Cross players who demonstrated pure sportsmanship. Those kids are every coach’s dream come true. Pure gems.”
The Meteors were coming off of an imposed bye-week, as their game against Lackawanna Trail last Friday was postponed due to the Lions COVID-19 pause.
Patton said, “A week off definitely helped. This is a super short week for us coming up, against an exceptional Old Forge team, so it will be interesting to say the least.”
“I’m happy with the result and I’m happy for the kids but despite what the scoreboard says we still have a ton of things we need to work on,” Patton said, referring to the 10 penalties in the game. “We got away with a lot of mistakes today. We have the skill position players to do what we want but we’re trying to get the offensive line to learn to take over the game so we can run the ball more.”
Holy Cross put together its only scoring drive when Gavyn Grems had a 2-yard touchdown run with 2:16 left in the game to avoid the shutout. Grems and Logan Tierney did most of the work for the Crusaders combining for 34 carries and 122 rushing yards.
When asked about picking up the long awaited win, Patton said, “Really? I honestly had no clue. It doesn’t matter to me. I’m not in this to break streaks, but rather I’m in it to help mold young men and women into being better humans.”
“We do our thing,” said Patton. “It doesn’t matter what the competition does. We play our game, we play competitively.”
The Meteors (1-1) face off with the 3-0 Blue Devils on Friday.
