LEEANNA BELL

John Martino, of Dallas, and Leeanna Bell were the first male and female to cross the finish line in the Second Annual Race to Remember Kara Cook 5K Run/Walk at Lake Carey on Saturday.

The race remembered Cook, a fifth grader from the Tunkhannock Area School District, who lost her battle to cancer in 2017, and served as a benefit for Allied Services, which had played a significant therapeutic role in improving Cook’s mobility throughout several medical setbacks.

Cook’s parents, Wally and Alisha were on hand to cheer on the participants who took to the course that essentially followed the road around Lake Carey.

Race organizer Adam Edwards also lifted up Irene Talcott, who recently passed away.

Edwards said Talcott was helped greatly by Allied’s rehab team in recent years, and her daughter Lori Gramberg was on hand to give the race’s ‘Get set, go.’

Top walkers in the event were Sarah Lupinski with a time of 37:57, and Paul Lupinski at 39:26.

In the race for the finish line, Martino outpaced second-place finisher Steve Himka, by 46 seconds.

Edwards said he was again overwhelmed by the participation, and could tell by all of the folks who were touched by Kara’s story that it would likely be a big day for Allied Services.

Kara’s parents also thanked those who remembered their daughter.

Edwards wanted to lift up all of the sponsors of last weekend’s event including

Anytime Fitness, RPD Enterprises, Karp Excavating, J. Karp & Sons, Aseracare, and in loving memory of Irene Talcott, Simplex Homes, Nimble Hill Winery & Brewery, Dixon’s Hoagie Hut, Home Assistant & Settlement Services, Edwards, NAPA Auto Parts, Allied Services, Farmers Insurance, Robinson’s, Kirby Timing, and WNEP’s Ryan’s Run.
