A sixth inning rally secured the Wyoming Valley Conference softball Division 2 championship on Thursday for the Lady Tigers with the win over Berwick.

Tunkhannock has fired off 13 straight wins, including three this week, behind pitchers Kendra Schultz and Hope Jones.

Both seniors picked up career strikeout milestones this week, with Schultz getting her 400th on Thursday against Berwick and Jones recording her 300th Tuesday against Nanticoke.

Schultz and Jones both registered their big Ks at home games.

At Tunkhannock, the Tigers won 7-2 over the Trojans as Jones and Schultz split pitching duties and combined for 12 strikeouts.

Against Nanticoke on Tuesday, Jones reached 300 career strikeouts and hit a home run, too, which was one of six extra-base hits by the Tigers. Faith Jones was 3-for-4. Jena Simmons and Nicole Howell each added two hits with RBIs.

The next day, the Lady Tigers were slated to face Liberty High School at the University of Scranton. Due to a scheduling issue, Tunkhannock headed instead to the Bethlehem school.

The Tigers recorded 17 hits at the plate and received a complete-game shutout pitching performance by Jones and Schultz, as the Tigers rolled to their 12th consecutive win.

All nine hitters in Tunkhannock’s starting lineup had at least one hit, led by Faith Jones (3-for-4, two runs, RBI) and Howell (3-for-4, run, RBI).

Jena Simmons and Hailey Farr each hit home runs, while Farr, Jones, Schultz and Gina Walsh had two hits each.

Schultz recorded her 400th career strikeout and had 14 total, and Tunkhannock rallied with a four-run sixth inning to clinch the Division 2 championship, beating Berwick 5-2 Thursday at home.

Schultz and Simmons both drove in two runs. Tunkhannock’s Erin Dunn was 3 for 3 with two runs scored.

Tunkhannock ended its softball season Tuesday at Dallas after this paper was published.
