Coach Whitney Search is still trying to get the Lady Warriors volleyball program on the right path.

The Elk Lake team has had some ups and downs over the past few seasons, and has not posted a win since the fall of 2017.

“We are so excited this year, even with the setbacks, as we have a lot of freshmen,” said Search. “About half of the team are ninth graders.”

Search, a Warrior alum, has been the Lady Warriors volleyball coach for the past four years and was a volleyball player for the same green and white team when she was in high school. She also took over the boys’ team this past spring, before the seasons were cut short by COVID.

“We have been doing a lot of splitting of practices to work on fundamentals with new players and I have been taking most returners to focus on building on their passing, hitting and serving,” she said.

According to Search, splitting the group allows more one on one time with the players, so the coaches can focus on their individual strengths, weaknesses, and needs.

Search said, “(Assistant Coach) Mary (Berg) and I think a lot alike and trust each other so much that I do not ever worry about her not giving the girls strong fundamentals.”

The Lady Warriors graduated three seniors this past fall, a relatively small count compared to previous season. In Search’s four years with the program, they have graduated 23 seniors.

“I have two seniors this year and I have vowed to make it the best year for them regardless,” she said, hinting towards the league’s shortened, and possibly eliminated, season.

The girls are running and completing some conditioning, Search says, to give them more confidence.

“It will also give them more opportunity to be leaders in the gym,” she added.

Sophomores Kelsey Lawrence, Julia Hibbard, Raylynn Dyson, and Cheyenne Horn.
