The Elk Lake wrestling team continues to grow in numbers and move in the right direction in becoming more competitive in the Lackawanna League.

The Warriors finished with a 2-6 record in Division 2 competition last season and will look to some of their returning players to help improve on that mark.

“We have a pretty good mix of ages and some younger guys to fill some spots,” head coach Rob Gagliardi said. “Our numbers have been growing every year so far. I don’t have an assistant coach this year, so being able to rely on the experienced kids to help me out if I have to focus on other things has been great. They’ve been able to take the lead with the younger kids and take them under their wing to help learning technique and completing workouts.”

Gagliardi, now in his third season as head coach, noted that several wrestlers returned to the mat this season focused on the task at hand.

“I’m really blown away by the confidence that the kids have shown since last school year,” he said. “Some of the guys that didn’t do as well as they would have liked last year are very confident in the room. They haven’t really spent any time on the mat since summer, but they’re starting out way better than last year.”

That confidence will hopefully lead to some more wins, as well as continued growth in the program in the years to come.

“Our long term goal year to year is that more kids come out until we can have a full unit,” Gagliardi said. “My goal is to fill 11 or 12 weight classes this year and compete in the league. We hope to beat the teams that we need to beat and compete with the teams that are more experienced and technical than we are right now.”

The Warriors will get their first taste of competition this Saturday at the annual Wyalusing Ram Duals.
