District 2 has a new site to hold its cross country championships next week.

The Wyoming County Fairgrounds in Meshoppen will host the races over two days: Thursday, Oct. 29 for the girls and Friday, Oct. 30 for the boys. If needed, the makeup date will be Sunday, Nov. 1.

Class 3A races both days begin at 9:30 a.m. Class 1A takes place at 12:30 p.m. and Class 2A goes off at 3:30 p.m. No spectators are allowed.

The event was scheduled to be at Lakeland High School Oct. 28 (girls) and Oct. 31 (boys). However, earlier this week, the Lakeland School Board said that it would be unable to host the championships since the school district is returning to full virtual learning Wednesday due to Lackawanna County’s “substantial” status in regard to the coronavirus pandemic.

That left District 2 officials scrambling to find a new site.

The annual Wyoming Valley Conference Championships were held Wednesday at Wyoming County Fairgrounds.

This year in each class, the team champion and five individuals from the District 2 meet qualify for the PIAA Championships in Hershey on Nov. 7. While that is no change for District 2 schools in Class 1A and 3A, it is a switch for District 2 schools in Class 2A, which in the past sent two teams and 10 individuals to states.
