The Warrior swim team will host the third annual Greg Chew Memorial swim meet against Tunkhannock on Dec. 3.
Greg Chew was a math teacher and coach at Elk Lake when he passed away in May of 2017.
Chew began the Elk Lake swimming program in the 1992-93 school year and was the first coach for the team.
Though he gave up coaching the Warriors varsity swim teams in the 1997-98 season, he continued on with the TigerSharks until the 2012-13 campaign. Chew was instrumental in both programs.
While at Elk Lake, Chew was an assistant soccer and baseball coach as well.
Elk Lake varsity swim coach Marion Austin, who also was a Tunkhannock swim instructor, approached Chew’s family about the possibility of hosting a swim meet between the two school’s in Greg’s memory.
Austin said, “Because Greg was an Elk Lake teacher, and with his involvement with Tunkhannock swimming, we thought this would be a good way to honor him.”
“It is beneficial to all of our swimmers to keep Greg’s memory here,” Austin explained.
After the meet, Austin and Darcy Howell, Chew’s widow, choose a scholarship recipient from the Warriors swim team. Previous winners were Lydia Ofalt in 2017 and Kale Decker in 2018.
The scrimmage, which will kick off the season, will be the first of two trips the Tigers make to Elk Lake, as they will also attend the Elk Lake Invitational on Dec. 28.
