Lackawanna Trail junior Richard Helbing has been leading the Lions basketball team in scoring. This past week, against Mountain View in the annual Coaches vs. Cancer game, he recorded 14 points. In six of the past eight games he has been Trail’s top scorer, and recorded double digit scores. In recognition of his achievement, Helbing has been named the Wyoming County Press Examiner Athlete of the Week.

Position: Center

Three reasons why you play: I play because I love the sport of basketball, it is a fun time, and I have been playing my whole life.

Other sports I play: None, I use to play football but I stopped to focus on basketball.

Favorite school subject: Wood Shop with Mr. Hickok, he is very supportive.

Biggest Role Model and why: My dad because he helps me through a lot of things and is very supportive in basketball. He is a good person, a good role model, to be around.

Post-graduation plans: I want to go to college to be a cop, and play basketball.

Superstitions or rituals: I don’t really have any.

What number do you wear and why? #21 because I like the number.

When did you start basketball competitively? In my freshman year I got more into the game, and more competitive.

Favorite school to compete at and why? Mountain View because it is a big rivalry game and it is always good to take the win from them.

What is your favorite basketball memory? When I block a shot and our student section gets hyped.

What is your dream job? To be a police officer or to play in the NBA.

What is the coolest place you have traveled to? Florida

Who is your closest teammate? Zac Stec. He helps me with post moves and is super competitive. We build off each other.

How would you describe Coach Sunseri in one word? Competitive

What is the best place for post game food? Either the Hoagie Hut or Pizza Hut

What is your favorite sports quote or motto? “Work Hard”

What are the Lions looking forward to at this point of the season? We want to win the rest of our games. We need to beat Susquehanna to force a tie for first place and force a one game playoff with them to win the league.

What is your secret to scoring in double digits in six of the last eight games? My teammates. They are real good at reading who is open and who isn’t. They just find a way to get me the ball.
