Elk Lake senior, Peyton Jones finished the state championship course in Hershey on Saturday in 15th place. This was his third time at states, also medaling last year as a junior. Jones had two first place finishes, three second place finishes and one third place in league meets this season, leading up to his earning a state medal this week. In recognition of his achievement, Jones has been named the Wyoming County Press Examiner Athlete of the Week.

Three reasons why you run: I enjoy it, I’m good at it, and I enjoy being part of a team.

Other sports I compete in: Indoor track (1500 and 3000) and spring track and field (1600 and 3200)

Biggest Role Model and why: My former teammate, Cody Oswald, because he always set a good example athletically and academically. He taught me to do well in both of those areas.

Post-graduation plans: To attend either SUNY-Morrisville or SUNY-Cobleskill for agriculture business management. I will probably run cross country, not sure about track.

Superstitions or rituals: I wear a headband and pray with the team before every race.

When did you start running competitively? My first race was the summer between sixth and seventh grade

Do you compete in races outside of the school season? Yes, I participate in a road race every once in a awhile, the Montrose Fourth of July KLR race, and the Superhero 5K at the Bridgewater Church.

Favorite school/field to compete at and why? The state course at Hershey. It is very open and the footing is so good. It is very easy to pass on that course, I really enjoy it.

What is your favorite Cross Country memory? Just every practice with the guys after school, laughing, joking, and the time spent together.

What is your dream job? A dairy herd manager

What is the coolest place you have traveled to? Ocean City, Maryland

What would your team anthem be? “September” by Earth, Wind, and Fire

Who are your closest teammates? Kale Decker, Cody Oswald (EL ‘18) and Brett Carney (EL ‘18)

How would you describe your coach in one word? Knowledgeable

How would he describe you? Relentless

What is the best post game food? A big cheeseburger from Red Robin

What is your favorite sports quote? “Talent will only get you so far. Hard work will get you further than talent.”

How do you prepare for meets? Get a good night’s sleep the night before, eat pasta the night before, lots of hydration during the day, and make sure to stretch well, good warm-up before the race.

How would you describe your senior season? I did the best I could. I was happy with my senior season, not every race was perfect, but I was still happy with it.

What advice can you leave to the underclassmen? Work hard, but enjoy yourself.

What will you take away from the team? It is important to make sacrifices for one another.
