An 18-year-old Tunkhannock man faces up to 32 years in prison and $55,000 in fines for assaulting Tyler Memorial Hospital employees.

Cameron Ebert admitted his responsibility when he entered a guilty plea last Wednesday by video before Wyoming County President Judge Russell Shurtleff.

In a plea agreement worked out between District Attorney Jeff Mitchell and Ebert’s attorney Timothy Michaels, some 27 different counts — including spitting at and striking two police officers — were reduced to three specifically directed at three Tyler employees.

The incident happened on April 12, 2019, when the defendant was 17, but DA Mitchell successfully sought to have Ebert tried as an adult when a first jury trial was scheduled for July 15, 2019. The matter was continued through six more jury dates including thrice during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The most egregious charge for Ebert was for his behavior toward an emergency room nurse, with court records stating, “The defendant pulled the victim to the floor by her hair and he began to forcefully strike her head against the floor 3-4 times, causing the victim to have a seizure from her head striking the floor. The victim had bruising to her left eye and forehead area, a bruised right forearm and a large area of missing hair on the back of her head where her hair was ripped from her scalp.” The Felony 1 count of aggravated assault carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in jail and a $25,000 fine.

He also faces a maximum of 10 years in jail and $25,000 in fines for a Felony 2 count of aggravated assault for an attack on an emergency room employee who was stuck in the face and head several times and bit the ER person’s forearm. Court records note, “The victim sustained a chipped tooth, a laceration on his lip, a swollen elbow, and a sore left hip.”

Ebert also faces a maximum of two years in jail and $5,000 in fines for striking a hospital employee who came to the ER nurse’s defense. Court records say Ebert struck the employee in the face “with a closed fist causing a laceration to her lower lip and bleeding from her mouth.”

Ebert is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 9.

Bail has been set at $100,000.
