CHESTERSMITH

A 63-year-old Mehoopany man faces as much as 20 years in state prison after pleading guilty Friday morning to aggravated indecent assault of a child.

Chester James Smith Sr. appeared before Wyoming County President Judge Russell Shurtleff who said Smith could face lifetime registration as a sex offender under the Adam Walsh Act.

According to court records, Smith sexually assaulted a seven-year-old girl in Tunkhannock Township last fall.

As part of a plea agreement with district attorney Jeff Mitchell’s office, Smith will not face additional felony charges of failure to register with the state police, once the sentence for this case is imposed.

When the charges were filed by Tunkhannock Township Police last December, they discovered that Smith, who had been convicted of sex offenses in 2003, had left the area without letting the state police know of his whereabouts.

U.S. Marshals located him in March camping in Towanda, and he has been in the Wyoming County Jail since March 15.
