The Tunkhannock Area School Board on Thursday agreed to sell off a pair of elementary schools that were closed in the wake of consolidation following the 2017-18 school year via a live auction in January.

The district had sought sealed bids in the six weeks leading up to Oct. 4 for the former Evans Falls Elementary School near Beaumont, and the former Mill City Elementary School near Lake Winola, but the results were much less than expected.

It had received a $50,000 bid for the Evans Falls campus but the district felt there was more value than what the bid represented, and it received no bids for the other campus.

TASD chief operating officer Shane Powers said the board’s Buildings & Grounds Committee met Tuesday, and made a recommendation which she explained Thursday was to enter into an agreement with Burke/Shamrock Auctions to have a live auction for both schools from the Evans Falls campus on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 3 p.m., and persons could do their bidding online as well.

The motion passed unanimously by the six school board members present.

Board member Bill Prebola said the board’s interest was to get the best value for the taxpayer.

Powers said there would be three walk-thru times for each building and while one of the dates, Jan. 10, had been selected, the other two were being worked out, and would be posted from the district’s website at www.tasd.net
