Wyoming County residents will now have a new place to get a haircut, a manicure, pedicure or even a massage.

Be Glossed Salon opened on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 511 Hunter Highway in Tunkhannock. The salon will be open Tuesday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Salon owner Rebecca Giovino has had dreams of opening her own salon since she was a little girl, and she’s excited to have that dream finally become a reality.

“Ever since I started doing hair, this has always been my dream,” Giovino said. “Growing up, I watched my parents own their own business, so I’ve always wanted to open up my own hair salon.”

The salon offers a wide range of hair services, including cuts, colors, and highlights. It also offers waxing and sugaring services, manicures, pedicures, and has a designated room for massage therapy if you are feeling tense and need to be loosened up.

Giovino says that the salon currently employs seven stylists. Even though it has only been open a week, Be Glossed already has around 400 clients listed on their rosters, so things have been extremely busy during opening week.

Salon coordinator and manager Mary Zona has been providing a big help to Giovino on the management side of the operation during opening week.

“Business has been fabulous so far,” Zona said. “We have been booked up pretty much every day. The customer feedback has been absolutely great. We are just ecstatic to finally get the operation up and running.”

There have been some challenges with opening up the salon because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Salons are currently only allowed to operate at 50 percent capacity, and all workstations must be at least six feet apart to comply with social distancing rules. Customers also have to wait at the front door, call the salon to let them know they have arrived for their appointment, and have their temperature checked before entering.

“With COVID, we have had some setbacks,” Giovino said. “We have not been able to let in as many customers as we want to, which has caused some backups with appointments. Our waiting room currently isn’t open to keep the clients separated, and we also aren’t allowed to do facial treatments yet.”

The pandemic also presented some past challenges that held up opening a bit longer than Giovino and her employees would have wanted. She was not able to start to get the salon ready until July, a couple months behind schedule, because of previous restrictions on salons and hairdressers.

“Before COVID, I was a hairdresser at another local salon,” Giovino said. “Being completely shut down was definitely a different world. We weren’t allowed to see clients or work at all. Luckily, I had saved money over the years and was still able to open the salon.

When the end of the pandemic eventually comes, Be Glossed is looking to have more events in the community to get their name out there, and be able to give more services to its clients.

We’re posting a lot to our Facebook and Instagram pages just trying to get the business out there, Zona said. We’re just trying to do anything we can to get more clients in here and to make them feel welcome.
