A survey of all 18 service stations in Wyoming County this past weekend revealed that gasoline prices jumped modestly across December.

The 87 octane, jumped 6.4 cents to $2.807 from the $2.743 a gallon consumers paid in the county four weeks ago, a survey of Wyoming County’s service stations on Jan. 4-5, revealed.

This past weekend’s county average was 22.2 cents more than the national average price for 87-octane on Sunday of $2.585 and 1.5 cents less than the Pennsylvania average of $2.822.

The average price for 89-octane jumped 5.4 cents to $3.069 from the $3.015 a gallon average of four weeks ago.

The average price of 93-octane locally on the weekend was $3.346. That is up 3.8 cents a gallon from the $3.308 average of four weeks ago.

According to statistics compiled by the American Automobile Association, a year ago 87-octane sold at a national average price of $2.245 a gallon. One month ago, it was $2.595.

Conventional wisdom says that the costs tend to reflect the volatility of the crude oil market where a barrel of crude traded for $63.05 a barrel Friday. That was nearly $4 more a barrel from one month earlier, and follows on the heals of the death of a leading Iranian military leader as a result of U.S. military action.

Regardless, the price of a barrel of crude is still around 45 percent of the peak price in the summer of 2008 of $147 a barrel.

A national record high for 87-octane of $4.114 was established on July 17, 2008. A state record high of $4.074 was established on July 16, 2008.

Gas prices hovered above the $3 mark until October of that year as instability and fear of a deepening recession rocked the global markets.

In January 2009, the average price of a gallon of 87-octane in Wyoming County was $1.701. That was the lowest price level since the Wyoming County Press Examiner began monitoring it in January 2005.
