RYAN KIERNAN

A 29-year-old Nicholson man who escaped from police custody last August after authorities found 630 packets of heroin in his home, was sentenced Wednesday to 45 months-12 years in state prison and $5,500 in fines.

Ryan Forrest Kiernan, of Lenape Lane, appeared before Wyoming County President Judge Russell Shurtleff, and told the judge he was not proud of the way he had lived his life and was sorry for the pain he caused to so many people including the court.

“I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to make up for the things I’ve done,” he said.

“It’s never too late to get on the right course,” the judge said.

Kiernan’s attorney Timothy Michaels said his client had already served 262 days and was looking for something on the low end of the spectrum.

However, given the circumstances, District Attorney Jeff Mitchell asked the judge for a sentence at the top range.

Shurtleff said it was on the high end mostly because it was his fourth arrest for possession with intent to deliver, and any of a lesser sentence would depreciate the magnitude of what he’d done.

According to court records, Tpr. Kevin Hibson was executing a search warrant on Kiernan’s home, when he discovered the heroin, digital scales, a bag of suspected methamphetamine, a glass smoking pipe, syringes and $2,219 in U.S. currency.

Police say that while they were in Kiernan’s home, he was put in handcuffs on a parole violation, when he suddenly got up and ran out of his residence and made his way into a wooded area where he continued to flee from the scene.

Kiernan was apprehended a few days later.
