Tiger Erik Bennett took fifth in both the long jump and triple jump Monday.

A pair of underclassmen took Tunkhannock to new heights - and gold medals- at the PIAA District 2 AAA track meet at Scranton Monday.

Sophomore Trejon Turner leaped to a 6-9 high jump, some two inches over second place Ky’Ron Harbin of Scranton while sophomore Dalton Yeust matched his personal best of 13 feet, some six inches ahead of second place finisher Connor Barnes of Wallenpaupack.

For Turner, the bar rattled for a split-second and came back to a rest. When it did, he let out a yell, stepped off the mat and celebrated a District 2 high jump championship.

Turner - who was also taking turns in the long jump - needed every last bit of energy and bounce left in him to clear the 6-foot-9 bar. He finally pulled it off with his last attempt.

“It’s like pure excitement. Kind of like a happy rage,” Turner described his reaction. “Me and Ky’ron, we don’t really know each other but when we compete, it’s just good competition.”

Turner couldn’t quite set a meet record - the 6-10 mark was set by another Tunkhannock athlete, Matt Blaisure, in 2002 - before calling it a day, though the busy afternoon didn’t help. Still, the sophomore is already on his way to states after adding a full half-foot to his range this year.

Both Turner and Yeust will advance to the state tourney.

Tiger Erik Bennet took fifth in both the long jump and triple jump. The Tigers’ 400 meter relay team came in eighth, and the 1600 meter relay team came in ninth. Billy Prebola took tenth in the javelin and the 3200 meter relay team also took tenth.

Tunkhannock, with 29 points, took 10th in the boys’ standings well behind the day’s co-champs Wallenpaupack and Scranton with 80 points each.

For the Lady Tigers, Gabrielle Roote won a silver medal in the javelin with a 114 foot, three inch toss.

Rebecca Avery also took sixth in the shot put and seventh in the discus.

Tunkhannock, with 13 points, took 17th in the girls’ standings well behind Abington Heights which outdistanced the field at 104.5 points.
