The Lackawanna Trail Elementary Center held its annual in-house K’NEX Competition for grades 6-8 on Jan. 28.

Trail students are now headed to Johnson College for the regional competition, which will be held on March 20. They will compete in the 2019 STEM Design Challenge.

The teams representing Trail at the regional competition are The Oceanators (Maddy Carpenter, Nora Evans, Gianna Ashley and Reagan Norman) and Disaster Masters (Sophie Haus, Laney Mecca, Lilah Ross and Sean Gilroy.) Their coaches are Mrs. Gail Franko, Mr. Chris Gercken and Mr. Craig Muller.

This year’s challenge included creating a structure that is capable of picking up an object, moving it at least six inches, and setting it back down; researching and incorporating an environmental friendly source of energy to “power” their structure; keeping a journal of their experiences; creating blueprints of their structure; and keeping a budget of pieces used and cost.

If successful, one of the teams will have the opportunity move on to the Pennsylvania state competition held in Harrisburg in the spring.
